Charles Russell hosts send off for Atlantic rowing star

2 October 2008

Charles Russell LLP hosted  an Atlantic Rowing Race send off  reception for Charlie Marlow, a solicitor at the firm, as he leaves the office behind and heads towards La Gomera in the Canary Islands where he will begin his epic journey across the Atlantic.

Charlie, along with his teammate Matthew Mackaness, will be competing in the rowing event heralded as ‘the World’s toughest endurance race’ against 21 other pairs in an attempt to break the current record of 39 days.

Charles Russell, sports law specialists, has supported Charlie Marlow throughout his preparations for this epic challenge.  The quest to cross the Atlantic is very testing and conditions will push the team’s physical and mental stamina to the limit.  In the past Atlantic Row competitors have faced hurricanes, three tropical storms, shark attacks and multiple capsizes resulting in seven lives being lost.  This challenge is only for the intrepid ocean-goer who can withstand a gruelling training regime and physical exhaustion during the passage.

Through this quest, Charlie and Matthew are aiming to raise £50,000 for two deserving charities, Brain Tumour UK and Shrewsbury House.  Brain Tumour UK aims to increase awareness and knowledge of brain tumours, carry out research into brain tumours as well as providing support and enhanced treatments and care for brain tumour sufferers.  Shrewsbury House is a Youth and Community Centre based in Everton, Liverpool.  The focus of Shrewsbury House is to meet the educational, social and spiritual needs of the local community, with a specific priority for children and young people.
