Paralympic Sailor, Helena Lucas, Takes 2011 US 2.4mR Pre-Worlds

Charles Russell sponsored athlete Helena Lucas sailed into win a gold medal at the recent 2011 2.4mR pre-Worlds.  The event was staged by the Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club and the United States 2.4mR Class Association.  Lucas finished ahead of Canada’s Paul Tingley and Bruce Millar, who tied for second place. 

Nineteen sailors from eight countries recently arrived at Charlotte Harbor a month ahead of the January 7-15th World Championships which will be held at the same venue.  From December 8-10th all nineteen boats competed against each other in the 2.4mR pre-Worlds, with action spread out across four races each day. 

After the first day of racing Lucas trailed first place by 6 points.  In the last race of the day she added a 7th place finish to her 2-1 start.  There was a considerable margin of around 30 points between 3rd and 4th place which meant the rest of the regatta was a Charlotte Harbor showdown among Millar, Tingley and Great Britain’s Helena Lucas.  After some really close racing and battles downwind, Helena went into the last race determined to sail her own race.  It paid off, with Helena moving into the lead.

Helena Lucas, Paralympic sailor, commented; “It’s great to have won the pre-Worlds, and gives me the confidence going into the Worlds in January.  I would like to thank Charles Russell LLP for supporting me for this event and I am looking forward to continuing to work with them towards another podium finish in January.”
